Kanyashree Prakalpa Yojana is an initiative of the Government of West Bengal, which has been started especially for the condition and betterment of girls from socio-economically disadvantaged families. This scheme is being implemented by the Department of Women Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal. Under the Child Marriage Act, 2006 (PCMA), the age of marriage has been fixed at 18 years for girls and 21 for boys.

Despite the Act being in existence for many years, the practice of early marriage of children continues in West Bengal. The West Bengal government has now decided to give the benefit of Kanyashree to every girl child. For this, the maximum limit on the annual income of the girl child’s family has been abolished. Earlier, the girl child used to get this benefit only when the annual income of the family was 1.20 lakhs. This scheme was launched in the financial year 2013. All the successful applicants in the age group of 13 to 18 years will get the scholarship amount of Rs.1,000 per annum. They will also get a one-time grant. 25,000 after attaining the age of 18 years and must be unmarried for that period.

Who can apply for Kanyashree Prakalpa Yojana

Any unmarried girl between the age of 13 to 19 years can be a Kanyashree beneficiary, if she is a resident of West Bengal and continues her studies in any institution recognized by our state.

Objectives of Kanyashree Scheme

Kanyashree aims to improve the status and well-being of the girl child in West Bengal

• To motivate them to remain in education for a long time, and to complete secondary or higher secondary education, or the equivalent in technical or vocational steam, to give them a better position in both economic and social spheres.
• Divorce until at least 18 years of age, the legal age of marriage, thereby reducing the risk of early pregnancy, associated risks of maternal and child death, and other debilitating health conditions, including malnutrition.
• The benefits of the schemes are paid directly into the bank accounts in the name of the girls, making the decision of the use of the money in their hands.

Components of Kanyashree Scheme

Annual Scholarship of Rs.500 :- It is recognized in regular or equivalent open school or equivalent vocational or technical training course for unmarried girls aged 13-18 years enrolled in classes VIII-XII.

One time grant of Rs 25000 :- For girls who are 18 years of age at the time of application, enrolled in Government recognized regular or open schools and colleges or pursuing vocational or technical training or sports activity or registered under the JJ Act.

progress :- Around 50 lakh girls from the state have been benefitted by the scheme and removal of the roof will help three lakh more girls annually. Since its launch, it has helped reduce the number of girls dropping out of school by around 11.5%. The scheme was awarded the United Nations Public Service Award in June 2017.

Establishment of Kanyashree University

It is Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s dream project to set up “Kanyasree Vishwavidyalaya” to ensure higher education for the girl child. In this new institution, all Kanyashree Prakalpa beneficiaries will be assured. The Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare will establish this Kanyashree University.

The government will also ensure that the Department of Technical Education and Training will provide special skill training to girls. This will enable them to appear for the placement drives and secure good jobs.

Documents Required for Kanyashree Yojana

• Photo-copy of the Voter ID card of the parent/legal guardian
• Photocopy of birth certificate issued by the appropriate authority
• Declaration of marital status of the applicant (to be made by the parent/legal guardian if the applicant is under 18 years of age, and the applicant himself is above 18 years).
• Photocopy of the page of the bank passbook which provides the details of the bank account holders
• Photocopy of the certificate issued by the appropriate authority, if the applicant has completed 13 years but has a disability of 40% or more and has not reached class 8th.
• Color passport size photographs of the applicant against a white background
