Rajasthan Farmer Loan Waiver Scheme – Background

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced the farm loan waiver scheme for farmers on 19 December 2018, 2 days after taking oath as the Chief Minister. Under this farmer loan waiver scheme, the government waives off all short-term agriculture (crop) loans taken from cooperative banks. Apart from this, the state government also waived off loans up to Rs 2 lakh taken from other banks till 30 November 2018 under the loan waiver scheme.

After the announcement of the much-awaited farm loan waiver scheme in Rajasthan, the first reaction comes from Mr. Rahul Gandhi, who said “it is done”. The Rajasthan Farmer Loan Waiver Scheme is expected to put an additional burden of Rs 18000 crore on the state exchequer. Announcement of Rajasthan Farmer Debt Waiver Scheme by Ashok Gehlot Government

Ahead of the assembly elections, the Congress party has promised to waive farm loans of farmers within 10 days of coming to power. All the 3 states i.e. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh have announced the Farmer Loan Waiver Scheme. Former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje announced Rajasthan Crop Loan Waiver Scheme

The Government of Rajasthan had announced the much-awaited Agriculture Loan Waiver Scheme / Crop Loan Waiver Scheme for the farmers. Former CM Vasundhara Raje had announced a farm loan waiver in the Rajasthan Budget 2018-19. Under this loan waiver scheme, the government is going to waive off the entire overdue/interest on the loan by 30th September 2017. In addition, the government will waive off loans/outstanding loans of up to Rs 50,000 for each farmer taken from cooperative banks.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje “Overdue Short Term Crop Loan Waiver Scheme” will give big relief to the farmers. Salient Features of Rajasthan Crop Loan Waiver Scheme by Vasundhara Raje Government

The important features and salient features of this Kisan Crop Loan Waiver Scheme are as follows:-

• Small and marginal farmers are the most vulnerable section of society. Therefore, the state government has decided to launch the Agriculture Loan Waiver Scheme / Overdue Crop Loan Waiver Scheme in Rajasthan.
• Accordingly, the entire outstanding loan amount of all farmers up to 30 September 2017 will be waived off. Rajasthan Farmer Loan Waiver Scheme will bring farmers in the category of outstanding loans.
• In addition, the government will provide a one-time loan waiver of up to Rs 50,000 of this outstanding loan taken from various cooperative banks.
• The Rajasthan state government has allocated a budget of Rs 8000 crore for the successful implementation of the Rajasthan Farmer Loan Waiver Scheme.
• In 2018-19, the government provides Rs 384 crore as subsidy for the disbursement of short-term interest-free loans/crop loans.

Apart from this, the state government has also decided to constitute Rajasthan State Farmers Debt Relief Commission in the Rajasthan Budget 2018-19. This commission will function as a permanent body.
